How to answer "Tell Me About Yourself?"

Once the introductions are over with, the first question in an interview is often "Tell me about yourself?".

Here’s a simple way to structure your answer:

Past - Present - Future:

  1. Past - Share a brief summary of your background and experience relevant to the role.
  2. Present - Highlight your current role, skills, and achievements.
  3. Future - Explain why you’re excited about this opportunity and what you hope to contribute/how your skills align with the role.

Tips:

  • Keep it 1-2 minutes. (Should the interviewer/s want to know more, they will ask.)
  • Focus on relevant professional experience.
  • Avoid giving your life story - keep it career-focused.
  • End with a forward-looking statement that aligns with the job.

This is the one chance you have to get across exactly what you want the interviewers to know. Prepare what you will say and include roles/duties, highlights and achievements, and why your skills fit with the role.
